Desexing: A Healthy Choice for Your Pet
Desexing (also known as spaying or neutering) is a simple procedure that provides lifelong health benefits for your pet while also helping to reduce unwanted litters. Every year, thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens end up abandoned or in shelters. By desexing your pet, you’re playing an important role in preventing this and ensuring fewer animals are left without a home.
The Difference Between Male & Female Desexing
- Male desexing (neutering): This procedure involves removing the testicles and is a straightforward surgery with a quick recovery. Neutering can help reduce unwanted behaviours such as roaming, aggression, and urine marking.
- Female desexing (spaying): This involves removing the ovaries and uterus, making it a more complex procedure. Spaying prevents unwanted pregnancies and eliminates the risk of life-threatening conditions like pyometra (uterine infection) and significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer.
When to Desex Your Pet
The best time to desex your pets is between 4 to 6 months of age, before pets reach sexual maturity. However, older pets can still be desexed safely, and your vet can advise on the best timing based on your pet’s breed and health.

Before & After Surgery Care
- Before surgery: Your pet will need to fast (no food) the night before. Water is usually allowed until the morning.
- After surgery: Rest and limited activity are important for a smooth recovery. Keep your pet indoors, prevent excessive licking of the wound, and follow all post-op care instructions provided by your vet.
